We’re proud to announce the launch of field testing for the INSTA-LOO — a new, affordable waterless emergency toilet designed and developed by Nexus by Sweden to serve displaced communities in crisis settings.
In collaboration with ACK Civils Africa, this 3-week pilot program is now underway at the Kateri Camp in Cibitoke, Burundi, which currently shelters over 8,000 people across 1,026 households.
“Inadequate sanitation facilities and poor waste management make the situation even more precarious and increase the risk of epidemics,” said Ms. Kasina, as reported by Radio Okapi.
As humanitarian needs in Burundi escalate — compounded by limited funding and a surge in displaced populations — solutions like the INSTA-LOO are more urgent than ever. According to the UNHCR, without immediate action, “more lives will be put at risk.”
💡A Solution Made Possible Through Partnership:
The INSTA-LOO project is made possible thanks to the CSR support of Frank Houweling and the Houweling Group and their production team in The Netherlands. Their contribution has been instrumental in bringing the INSTA-LOO project to life and advancing our shared mission of sustainable, humanitarian impact.
We’re thrilled to bring this innovation to the field — and we’ll be sharing test results and insights from Burundi soon.
Stay tuned for updates on how INSTA-LOO helps to restore dignity, hygiene, and hope.
